What are Botox injections?

Botox treatment, also known as anti-wrinkle injections, is a popular treatment that helps to target and reduce fine lines and wrinkles on the face.

Anti-wrinkle injections work by using a small dose of Botulinum toxin to relax specific facial muscles. These are the muscles that control our facial expressions such as frowning or smiling.

They do not freeze these muscles, but rather they stop them from contacting, which means that any lines that appear because of the pull of the underlying muscles will fade.

The results last for 3-4 months, at which point the muscles will go back to working normally and your lines and wrinkles will come back.

Anti-wrinkle treatment does much more than tackle facial wrinkles. It can also help to treat excessive sweating and relax the skin that surrounds acne scarring to help improve its appearance. Again, you will need repeat treatments to maintain the results.

What areas can you get anti-wrinkle injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections will only work on dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles caused by facial movement). These wrinkles are also known as expression lines.

The most common areas for these lines and wrinkles include:

  •       Frown lines – on the forehead and just above the eyebrows
  •       Forehead lines – horizontal lines across the forehead
  •       Crow’s feet – the outer corners of the eyes (also known as laughter lines)
  •       Bunny lines – fine lines on the sides of your nose
  •       Lip lines – from pursing your lips

Botox injections vs dermal fillers

We find that our patients often get confused about the difference between Botox treatments and dermal fillers. This is why we are here to break down what each one does.

Anti-wrinkle injections work best on fine lines and wrinkles that appear on the face when you use your facial muscles. The Botox helps to temporarily relax these muscles.

Dermal fillers or skin fillers are different. They work on deep set wrinkles that remain static on the face. They help to plump to restore volume in areas of the face where the skin is sagging.

Fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance found in the skin. It hydrates and strengthens the skin. They add volume and definition to the cheeks, lips, nose and jawline. Dermal fillers can also help with collagen stimulation in the skin, which leads to stronger and firmer skin over time.

What happens during anti-wrinkle treatment in Berkshire?

Your first step is to meet with one of our medical aesthetic doctors for a consultation. This is where we can get to know more about you, assess your skin and look at your medical history. From this, we will develop a bespoke treatment plan to help you achieve optimal results.

During the treatment, your doctor will talk you through where the injection sites will be and how much Botulinum toxin they will use. We use very tiny needles to inject the face and we only use small doses of the Botox treatment. Most patients describe the treatment as being relatively comfortable. You will feel a small pinch or scratch when the injections go in.

Your treatment should take no longer than 30 minutes to complete. You can go back to your normal activities straight away including driving. The doctor will give you some aftercare instructions to take home so that you can get the most out of your results.

It can take 1-2 weeks for the Botox injections to do their job and for your wrinkles to fade. This will last for 3-4 months, at which point, we advise you to book an appointment to have a top-up treatment.

Am I suitable for Botox treatment?

Because Botox treatment has an exceptional safety record, most people are suitable to have it. However, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking antibiotics or have a severe neuromuscular disorder, you will not be able to have this treatment.

We take you through your treatment options at your free, no-obligation consultation. Even if you are not suitable, we will help you find another skin treatment to help reduce your lines and wrinkles.
