What are cysts?

Skin cysts are small, round lumps that sit underneath the skin and often contain fluid or pus. They can grow slowly and vary in size. Some are the size of a pea and other cysts are several centimetres in width.

Both epidermoid cysts and sebaceous cysts are usually flesh-coloured bumps that are smooth. However, some cysts can also have a small, dark spot in the middle.

You can develop a cyst on most parts of the body. The most common areas include the skin, breasts, kidneys and ovaries. They can also appear on the bones. Many people also believe that cysts only develop in middle age, however, cysts can form at any age but are most common between puberty and the age of 40.

Most skin cysts are harmless and non-cancerous (benign). Skin cancers are not the same as cysts. Skin cancer or tumours tend to be more firm and often change shape or size when you add pressure to them. If you have a lump anywhere on your skin that you are not sure of what it might be, you should always consult with a doctor straight away.

Common types of cysts

Cysts can look different in size, type and location. The most common types of cysts include:

Pilar cysts

Pilar cysts are a round bump that are skin-coloured and develop under the surface of your skin. They are most common on the scalp and result in protein build-up in the hair follicles.

Epidermoid cysts

These are small lumps that contain keratin, which is a protein that is important for helping build your hair, skin and nails. Epidermoid cysts form when something blocks your hair follicles and skin cells build up underneath the blockage. They can look skin-coloured, tan or yellow in colour.

Sebaceous cysts

These types of cysts contain sebum and often develop within the sebaceous glands. These are glands that are part of your skin and hair follicles. They are used to make oil for your skin and hair. Sebaceous cysts often occur when there is damage to the glands.

Meibomian cysts or skin lesions

This type of cyst is a small round lump that can appear on the upper or lower eyelid. They are the result of chronic inflammation or a blockage in the meibomian gland. They are fairly common and can be removed by minor surgery such as an excision or curettage.

What happens during private cyst removal in Reading?

At The Chiltern Medical Clinic, you will have your consultation and cyst removal treatment with a trained doctor or surgeon. This is important because it helps to prevent the risk of infection or damage to your skin. We mainly treat sebaceous and epidermoid cysts.

You will have your cyst removed under local anaesthetic. This will be an injection to help numb the affected area and make the minor surgery more comfortable. Once the area is numb, the doctor will make an incision over the cyst and the cyst sac is then removed along with any other contents. We then close your skin with stitches. You may be left with a very small scar.

If the doctor can remove the cyst sac intact, there will be very little chance of a cyst forming again in the treated area.  Your stitches will either dissolve or they will be removed 7-10 days after your surgery.

If you have a meibomian cyst, you will have your treatment with our dedicated eye surgeon. We have a lot of experience in removing this type of cyst and helping our patients to achieve great results. The procedure involves making a small cut to the cyst and cleaning out what is inside. It is a quick treatment and you can go home the same day.
