What are skin tags?

Skin tags are a common skin condition that affects both men and women equally. They appear as harmless growths that hang off the surface of the skin. A skin tag looks like a small, soft, flesh-coloured piece of skin.

The good news is that skin tags are not a serious medical condition and are harmless to you. We find that patients want to remove skin tags because they are rubbing against clothing and jewellery and are becoming sore or uncomfortable.

Skin tags tend to form more on ageing skin, but you can get them at any age. They develop when skin folds and rubs together. The most common areas where skin tags appear are the armpits, neck, thighs, eyelids, groin and under the breasts.

If you have a skin lesion that you feel might be a skin tag, or you notice any other forms of skin lesions that are causing you concern, you should always consult with a doctor first.

Can you safely remove skin tags yourself?

The short answer to this is no, you should not remove skin tags on your own. This is because all skin tags are vascular and are linked to a blood source.

This means trying to cut them off or remove them yourself can be painful and cause bleeding. You will also include your risk of infection and scarring.

With a minor surgical procedure at The Chiltern Medical Clinic in Reading, our doctors will ensure that you receive the best care during your skin tag removal treatment. What’s more, you will be free from your skin tags in under an hour.

The best method to remove skin tags in Reading

Sometimes, skin tags will naturally fall off over time. For this to happen, however, there needs to be a lack of blood supply to the skin tissue to allow it to die. This can often take months or years.

Your first step in skin tag removal treatment is to meet with one of our doctors for an in-depth consultation. This enables them to look at your skin tags and your medical history and decide on the best course of treatment.

The main treatment we offer for skin tag removal at our Reading clinic is shave excision removal.

Skin Tag Removal Reading

What is shave excision skin tag removal?

This form of skin tag removal sounds more painful than it is. This minor type of surgery is simple to perform and provides quick results. It is the most common form of skin tag removal, as well as other skin growths such as moles.

The tool we use for shave excision is a sharp razor or scalpel. This enables us to remove skin tags neatly and smoothly without causing too much stress to the skin and with minimal scarring. You can also go back to your normal activities straight after your treatment.

What happens during skin tag removal treatment Reading?

During your shave excision treatment, the doctor will take the following steps:

  1.     They will first inject the area underneath the skin tag or skin tags with an anaesthetic numbing agent. This will help stop any discomfort during the minor surgery and make it easier to remove.

  1.     The doctor will make surgical cuts with a sharp razor or scalpel. You may feel the pushing of the scalpel on the skin, but you should not feel any pain.

  1.     The doctor may use a chemical known as Driclor (Aluminium Chloride Hexahydrate) to stop any bleeding and help the blood to clot whilst sealing any small blood vessels.

  1.     Once your skin tag is removed you will see a small wound that is similar to a graze. You will not need to have any stitches with shave excision.

  1.     The doctor will clean the area and apply a sterile bandage to stop the wound from rubbing on your clothes and stop any bacteria from getting into it whilst it heals.

What happens after skin tag removal with shave excision?

Following your skin tag removal treatment, the doctor will ask you to keep the area dry for 24 hours. They will also provide you with clear aftercare instructions including when to remove the bandage and how to keep the area clean.

The wound should heal itself within 7-10 days. The skin in the treatment area may look more pink or red for a few weeks, but this is normal and will start to fade. You may be left with a very small scar or no scar at all.

We will also advise you to keep the wound covered if you are spending time in the sun. This is because exposure to the sun can darken the wound and make any small scar more noticeable.
